Assessment day only feels stressful when nobody's told you what actually happens. This guide walks through arrival and registration, how the practical test itself is run under CAMS rules, when results actually come out, and exactly what to do next — pass, not-yet, or somewhere in between.
A Standardised, Fair Process
The assessor on the day has no relationship with the swim school that taught your child — they simply check performance against a fixed set of national must-see criteria and record the result on the CAMS platform. That's good news: nothing about the outcome depends on which centre you trained at, only on whether the skills are genuinely there.

Before the real assessment, we run a free mock session in the same format as the actual test — same must-see criteria, same pacing — so assessment day itself feels familiar rather than unknown. Most nerves come from not knowing what to expect; this removes that entirely.
On The Day
What Actually Happens on Assessment Day
Doors typically open around 30 minutes before the scheduled slot, so plan to arrive early rather than right on time — late arrivals risk being turned away entirely. Head to the designated registration point with your confirmation email and, if applicable, your child's registered profile details; each swimmer usually receives a coloured cap matching the stage being assessed that day, which makes it easy for assessors to track who's testing what.
The practical test itself runs through each stage's must-see criteria in turn — entries, sculling, strokes, survival and rescue skills, depending on the stage. Entries involving jumps or dives are always done under direct assessor guidance for safety. If a swimmer can't complete a specific criterion on the first attempt, the assessor may allow up to three re-attempts at that particular skill during the same session — it isn't a single make-or-break try, and a shaky moment on one skill doesn't automatically end the assessment.
One thing worth knowing in advance: results are never shared on the spot. Assessors don't discuss outcomes with swimmers, coaches or parents at the poolside — a deliberate rule that keeps the process standardised and free from on-the-day disputes. Results are published on the CAMS platform within 48 hours, so the walk home is genuinely just "we'll know soon," not "we already know but they won't say."

A few CAMS policies are worth knowing before assessment day, so nothing catches you by surprise.
The Theory Quiz Has a Deadline
The online theory quiz can be taken before or after the practical, but if taken after, it must be completed within 7 days — miss that window and the practical result is forfeited. A one-time one-month extension is available on CAMS for a small admin fee, but nothing further after that.
Skill-Based, Not Time-Based
A "not-yet" result isn't a single blunt verdict — the assessor records exactly which specific criteria were and weren't met. That breakdown is what makes a second attempt targeted and productive, rather than repeating the whole stage from scratch.
Appeals Have a Strict Window
If you genuinely believe the assessment process itself wasn't followed correctly, you can file a formal appeal through CAMS — but only within 72 hours of results being released, and only for procedural grounds, not simply disagreement with the outcome.
No Cancellations, But Rain Plans Exist
Once registered, assessment slots generally can't be cancelled — only rescheduled through the platform. If bad weather forces a rain-off, only participants who actually showed up are eligible for a rescheduled slot, so it still pays to turn up even in uncertain weather.
