Transferring SwimSafer progress between swim schools

By Coach Tan Meng Chew (MC), Founder and Head Coach, SG Sink Or Swim
"If we switch schools, does my child lose everything they've done so far?" This is one of the most common worries I hear from parents thinking about changing coaches partway through their child's SwimSafer journey, whether that's because of a house move, a scheduling conflict, or simply wanting a better fit. The good news is genuinely reassuring: your child's completed SwimSafer stages don't belong to any single swim school. What can vary is how smoothly the transition itself goes, and that's worth understanding properly before you make the switch.
I'm Coach Tan Meng Chew, or MC, and I run SG Sink Or Swim. This guide covers exactly what does and doesn't carry over when you move your child between providers, how the national system actually works behind the scenes, and how to make a transfer as smooth as possible.
The Good News First: Certified Stages Are National, Not School-Specific
Since 1 July 2025, SwimSafer registration, in-water assessments and the accompanying theory quiz all run through a centralised national platform called CAMS, the Centralised Assessment Management System, operated by Singapore Aquatics, with digital e-certificates issued through FileSG upon successful completion.
This centralisation is exactly why your child's progress is safe. Because certification is now centralised through CAMS and issued as an official e-certificate via FileSG, records aren't tied to a single swim school. Once your child has passed a stage, that certificate sits on the national system, retrievable through their own CAMS account, regardless of which school or coach originally taught them or booked the assessment.
In practical terms: if your child has completed SwimSafer Stage 3, that Stage 3 certificate exists independently of the coach or school that got them there. A new coach at a new school doesn't need to "recreate" or re-verify that certification; it's already a matter of official record. Your child simply continues from Stage 4 onward, wherever they end up training next.
How the CAMS Account Actually Works
To understand what transfers and what doesn't, it helps to know a bit about how a CAMS account is structured.
One account, one child, one email. A CAMS account uses one unique email per child as the CAMS User ID, and this account is not linked to Singpass, and is separate from FileSG's own login system, though completed certificates flow into FileSG.
The child gets "tagged" to a coach or school. To book an assessment, a child needs to be tagged under an NROC-certified coach or swim school within the CAMS system. This tagging is what allows a specific accredited instructor to validate that your child is ready and register them for an assessment slot.
The account itself belongs to the parent and child, not the school. Since the email and account are set up by you, this account persists regardless of which coach your child is currently tagged to. This is the structural reason why switching schools doesn't wipe out prior progress: the account, and the certificates linked to it, are yours, not the school's.
What Actually Happens When You Switch Schools
Given that structure, here's what a transfer genuinely involves.
1. Completed stage certificates stay exactly as they are. Nothing needs to be redone, re-verified, or reissued. Your child's official record shows they passed whatever stages they've passed, full stop.
2. You'll need to have your child re-tagged to the new coach or school in CAMS. Since assessment booking requires the child to be tagged under a specific accredited instructor, your new coach will need to update this tagging before they can register your child for their next assessment.
3. Your new coach will likely want to do their own assessment of where your child stands. This isn't about doubting the official certificate, it's simply good practice. A properly run first lesson is a genuine assessment, finding out exactly where a swimmer is comfortable and capable, which matters even more when a child is arriving with prior training from elsewhere. Every coach teaches slightly differently, and a new coach benefits from seeing your child in the water directly rather than working purely off a certificate and a stage number.
4. A stage that was in progress, but not yet passed, effectively restarts under the new coach. This is the one area genuinely worth being clear-eyed about. If your child was training toward Stage 4 but hadn't yet passed the assessment when you switched schools, the new coach will need to bring your child up to readiness for that stage in their own way, since the "roughly 12 hours per stage" guideline is just that, a guideline, and different coaches structure their lead-up differently. This isn't lost progress in any official sense, since no certificate existed yet for that stage, but it can mean some overlap in what's covered as the new coach gets to know your child's specific technique and habits.
5. Older certificates from before July 2025 remain retrievable too. If your child completed stages under the previous system, those older certificates can still be retrieved from FileSG via ActiveSG's SwimSafer records, so a switch doesn't affect historical certification from before CAMS existed either.
What Doesn't Transfer, and Why That's Not Actually a Problem
The informal relationship and accumulated knowledge a coach builds over time. This is the real, if intangible, thing that changes when you switch. A coach who has taught your child for months learns exactly which cue works for them, how fast they can be pushed, and what specifically has been holding them back. A new coach starts that relationship from scratch, even though the official certification record doesn't. This is precisely why coach continuity matters so much within a single school, and it's a reasonable trade-off to weigh before deciding to switch, not a reason to avoid switching if the current fit genuinely isn't working.
Any informal progress notes a previous coach kept. If your previous school gave you written notes on your child's specific sticking points, bring those to the new coach; they can be genuinely useful context, but they're not an official record and won't automatically follow your child anywhere.
Partial credit for hours already paid toward an uncompleted stage. This is a commercial matter between you and the school you're leaving, governed by their own refund or credit policy, rather than anything to do with the national CAMS system. Always check a provider's cancellation and refund terms before committing to any package.
Why You Might Consider Switching Schools
There are plenty of legitimate reasons a family ends up wanting to change providers partway through a SwimSafer journey, and none of them should be complicated by fear of losing progress.
A house move. If you've relocated to a different part of Singapore, continuing with your original coach may no longer be practical.
A scheduling change. A new job, a new school timetable, or a sibling's activities can all shift what times actually work for your family.
The coach isn't the right fit. Sometimes a child simply doesn't click with a particular coach's style, and that's a perfectly good reason to look elsewhere, regardless of how much progress has already been made.
You want coach continuity going forward, and the previous arrangement didn't offer it. If you've been experiencing instructor rotation at your current provider, moving to a school that guarantees the same coach every week for the remainder of the journey can be worth the transition cost.
Concerns about certification or safety practices. If you've discovered your current coach isn't actually properly SwimSafer accredited, verified through CoachSG's National Register of Coaches, that's a serious and valid reason to switch immediately, regardless of stage progress.
How to Make the Transfer Smooth
1. Confirm your child's CAMS account details before you switch. Make sure you know the login email used as the CAMS User ID, since your new coach will need this to have your child re-tagged.
2. Bring any informal progress notes from the previous school. Even though these aren't official records, they can help a new coach understand your child's history faster.
3. Be upfront with the new coach about exactly which stage your child last passed, and where they were in the process toward the next one. This lets the new coach plan an honest, accurate starting point rather than guessing.
4. Expect an assessment lesson, and treat it as valuable, not redundant. A genuine first-lesson assessment with a new coach isn't bureaucratic box-ticking, it's exactly how a good coach ensures they're building on an accurate picture of your child's actual current ability, not just a stage number on a certificate.
5. Ask the new coach directly how they'll structure re-tagging and the next assessment booking. Given that CAMS registration closes a set window before the assessment day and slots open on a rolling basis, ask about realistic timing for your child's next test once they're settled in.
6. Check the outgoing school's refund or credit policy for any unused, prepaid lessons. This is worth confirming before you formally leave, since policies vary by provider.
How SG Sink Or Swim Handles Incoming Transfers
A genuine assessment, not a fixed script. Whether your child is brand new to swimming or arriving mid-journey with several SwimSafer stages already completed, their first lesson with us is an honest assessment of where they're actually at, built around them specifically rather than assumed from a stage number alone.
We handle the CAMS re-tagging directly. Once we've assessed your child and you've decided to continue with us, we take care of getting them properly tagged under one of our certified SwimSafer Instructors so future assessments can be booked without unnecessary delay.
Certification you can verify. Our coaches hold NROC-recognised swimming qualifications and are certified SwimSafer Instructors with current first aid and CPR/AED certification. Ask us for the details and check them yourself on CoachSG's National Register of Coaches.
One coach, going forward. From the moment your child settles in with us, they keep the same certified coach for the rest of their SwimSafer journey, rather than facing further rotation on top of the school change itself.
Honest pacing, always. We won't rush your child toward an assessment before they're genuinely ready, whether they're starting fresh with us or arriving from another school.
Every age and format. Baby, toddler and kids lessons, adult beginner and stroke correction, ladies-only and senior lessons, special needs swimming, SwimSafer preparation and competitive training, across Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang/Senja, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi and Tengah, plus condo lessons on request.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my child lose their completed SwimSafer stages if we switch schools?
No. Completed stage certificates are issued through the national CAMS system and retrievable via FileSG, independent of any single school. They remain valid regardless of where your child trains next.
Do we need to redo an assessment for a stage my child already passed?
No, a passed stage stays passed. A new coach will typically assess your child's current ability as a starting point for continued teaching, but this doesn't reopen or repeat an already-certified stage.
What if my child was partway through a stage they hadn't passed yet?
There's no official record for an incomplete stage, so there's nothing to "lose" in that sense, but a new coach will need to bring your child up to readiness for that stage assessment in their own way, which may mean some overlap with what a previous coach had already covered.
How does the new school get access to my child's CAMS account?
Your child needs to be re-tagged under the new coach or school within the CAMS system before they can book your child's next assessment. Your new coach can guide you through this.
Are pre-2025 certificates still valid?
Yes. Older certificates from before the CAMS system launched in July 2025 remain retrievable from FileSG via ActiveSG's SwimSafer records.
Should I be worried about switching schools mid-journey?
Not in terms of losing official progress. The main thing to weigh is the informal relationship and accumulated understanding a coach builds over time, which does restart with a new coach, even though certification itself doesn't.
How do I get started with a transfer to SG Sink Or Swim?
Tell us which SwimSafer stage your child last passed and roughly where they were heading next, and we'll arrange an honest assessment lesson and handle the CAMS re-tagging from there.
Final Thoughts
Switching swim schools partway through a SwimSafer journey used to be a genuinely bigger concern before the national CAMS system centralised everything. Today, your child's completed stages exist as an official record independent of any particular coach or school, so a move, a scheduling change, or simply wanting a better fit doesn't put that progress at risk. What does matter is choosing a new coach who takes the transition seriously, assesses your child honestly rather than assuming based on a stage number, and offers the coach continuity going forward that makes the rest of the journey smoother than whatever prompted the switch in the first place.
If you're considering transferring your child's SwimSafer progress to us, SG Sink Or Swim can walk you through exactly what that involves. You can reach us at (65) 9113 1462 or through sgsinkorswim.com, and we'll make the transition as smooth as possible.
