Because the head naturally rises and falls with each stroke cycle, small errors in timing or angle create outsized effects on drag, breathing rhythm, and overall efficiency. Many swimmers unknowingly sabotage their breaststroke by lifting their head too high, too early, or holding it up too long—habits that are often rooted in breathing anxiety rather than technical necessity. Why Head Position Matters So Much in Breaststroke

In freestyle or backstroke, the head stays relatively stable throughout the stroke cycle. In breaststroke, the head must rise to allow breathing, then return to a lower position during the glide—and how this rise and fall is executed directly affects the swimmer's speed and energy expenditure.

  • Excessive head lift raises the shoulders and chest too high out of the water, which drops the hips and legs, increasing drag significantly

  • Late head lift can cause a rushed, panicked breath that disrupts the pull-kick-glide timing

  • Holding the head up too long delays the glide phase and shortens the distance covered per stroke

  • Poor head-neck alignment (looking too far forward or too far down) can strain the neck and disrupt streamlining during the glide

Because the head is relatively heavy and its movement affects the body's center of mass, even small adjustments to head timing and angle can produce noticeable improvements in speed and breathing comfort.


1. Wall Glide with Head Position Awareness

This foundational drill builds awareness of proper head alignment during the glide phase, which is the reference point for all other head movements in the stroke.

How to do it:

  • Push off the wall in a streamlined position, face down, with your head in a neutral position (not tucked, not lifted)

  • Hold the glide as long as possible, focusing on keeping your eyes looking slightly down and forward, not straight down or straight ahead

  • Notice how this neutral position feels compared to any habitual tendency to look forward

What it improves: Establishes the "home base" head position that breaststroke should return to after each breath, reducing unnecessary movement.

2. Breaststroke Kick with Head-Up, Head-Down Alternation

  • Every 3–4 kicks, lift your head just enough to take a breath, then lower it back to the neutral gliding position

  • Focus on lifting only enough for your mouth to clear the water—not your entire chin or neck

  • Exhale forcefully underwater just before this minimal lift, so you're not gasping for air when you do lift

4. Pull with Buoy and Focused Breathing Timing

Isolating the arm pull with a buoy allows swimmers to focus entirely on syncing head movement with the pull phase, without the kick as a distraction.

  • Place a pull buoy between your legs to eliminate the kick

  • Perform the breaststroke pull, lifting your head to breathe precisely as your hands sweep outward and begin the pull (not before, and not after)

  • Return your head to the neutral position as your hands come together and extend forward into the glide

5. Mirror or Video Self-Check Drill

Because head position is difficult to feel accurately in the water, visual feedback is one of the fastest ways to identify problems.

  • Review the footage specifically looking at how high the head rises, how long it stays up, and how quickly it returns to neutral

  • Compare the footage to reference videos of efficient breaststroke technique, noting specific differences in timing or height

7. Breath Control and Exhale Timing Drill

While not a head position drill in the strictest sense, breath control significantly affects how much or how little a swimmer needs to lift their head, making it an important companion practice.

How to do it:

  • Focus on exhaling steadily underwater throughout the glide and kick phase, rather than holding your breath and exhaling quickly right before inhaling

  • This allows for a calmer, more controlled inhale that doesn't require as much head lift or time out of the water

  • Practice this rhythm during easy swimming before applying it to faster-paced sets

What it improves: Reduces the physical urgency behind each breath, which in turn reduces the tendency to over-lift the head out of anxiety or oxygen debt.
